UTTC Women Compete at Buster Gilliss Mon-Dak Tournament
United Tribes women's basketball went 2-1 on the weekend, capturing 5th place, to open the 2023-24 season.
The United Tribes women's basketball team finished 2-1 in the Buster Gilliss Mon-Dak Tournament held at the Four Bears Event Center, November 3-5.
In the first round of play, Williston State proved to be too much for the Thunderbirds edging a 84-59 victory. Tetons were led by freshman, Allie Garcia, with 21 points on 9-of-21 shooting and sophomore, Taylor Moffat, 19 points and 7 rebounds. Tetons' sophomore, Elizabeth Fields, also produced a balanced state sheet with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and 4 assists. Overall, Williston shot 45.9% from the field and outrebounded the Thunderbirds, 45-38.
The second round of action seemed to be replaying very similarly, as the Thunderbirds matched up against Miles City. The Pioneers jumped ahead of the Thunderbirds, 41-23, to conclude the first half. But, the game would be a tale of two halves. The Thunderbirds stormed back and outscored Miles City, 31-12, in the fourth quarter to defeat the Pioneers, 71-66; Moving the Thunderbirds to 1-1 on the season. UTTC was led by sophomore, Tyleigh Brady, with 20 points, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and sophomore, Myona Dauphinais, with 15 points and 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. The Pioneers had four players end in double figures. Becky Melcher, Lainey Smith, and Brae Eneboe all collected 10 points, while reserve, Jessica Makayabo, chipped in 13 points and 4 steals.
The conclusion of the Mon-Dak Tournament featured United Tribes and Lake Region State College, winner claiming consoltation championship (5th place). Ultimately, the Thunderbirds would defeat the Royals, 78-71. United Tribes produced a balanced scoring sheet with five players scoring in double figures. Sophomores, Myona Dauphinais and Mallory Yankton, led the charge with 19 points and 15 points, respectively. Dauphinais also contributed 6 assists, while shooting 5-of-5 from the charity stripe. Freshman, Alionna Lawrence, also had a productive morning with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Sophomore, Tyleigh Brady, contributed 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Rounding out double figure scoring, freshman, Melina Shangreaux, would give a huge spark off the bench and score 11 points and pull down 8 rebounds.
