United Tribes knocks off undefeated league leading North Dakota State College of Science
Thunderbirds hold on to win 88-78 against the NDSCS Wildcats
The United Tribes Thunderbirds faced a daunting task Sunday afternoon inside a roaring Thunderdome. The visiting Wildcats of North Dakota State College of Science came into the game undefeated (8-0) and had defeated thier last three conference opponents by an average of nearly 40 points (38.3).
The red hot Wildcats came out of the gates strong jumping to an 18-8 lead. Jayce Archambault answered the call off the bench by hitting back to back threes to tie the game at 20 a piece. The Thunderbirds eventually pushed the lead to 36-24 on two Famous Lefthand freethrows with 6:21 to play in the half. Science ended the half on a 19-7 run and went to the locker room trailing 43-42.
The Wildcats closed the gap to one point multiple times in the second half, but Tribes never relinquished the lead outscoring their opponents 45-36 in the half and going on to win 88-78.
The Thunderbirds shot 50% from the field, out rebounded thier opponents 47-37, and dished out 22 assists in the win.
Leading the way was Luke Wells Jr. with 21 points, a game high 9 assists, and 5 rebounds. Lefthand continued his stellar play with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. DK Middleton had another nice all around game finishing with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Freshman point guard Sylvester Union put in 12 points, had 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The win moves the Thunderbirds to 4-3 in the Mon Dak Conference standings and 5-3 overall. They travel to Turtle Mountain CC on Tuesday and return home on November 30th for a game against Dickinson State University at 6pm.
